Synopsis
Serena explains how Ash once helped her at summer camp, coaches him through a Rhyhorn race, and after foiling Team Rocket officially joins the group. She accepts Ash’s invitation to travel to Cyllage City by way of Lumiose City, and tells Clemont she wants to return a handkerchief: years ago she got lost at Professor Oak’s camp and hurt her knee, and Ash bandaged it and led her back, telling her never to give up.
Ash remembers her straw hat, and Serena returns the handkerchief. When a stampede of Rhyhorn racers passes, Officer Jenny brings the group to Odyssey Village and talks Ash into the next day’s race; at the stables Serena reveals her mother is a famous racer and teaches Ash to ride, rethinking her own dislike of the sport.
On race day Inkay ink-blinds the cameras, and Team Rocket net Ash and cage Pikachu and his Rhyhorn on a train. Clemont’s Bunnelby fires Mud Shot, and Serena battles for the first time: Fennekin’s Ember makes James drop the controller, Clemont smashes it, and the freed Pokémon blast Team Rocket away. That evening Grace arrives, and Serena announces she will travel with Ash.
