A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle! is the 5th episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 800th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 805, Bulbapedia code XY005). It first aired in Japan on 7 November 2013 and in the United States on 15 February 2014. It falls within the season’s Santalune City & Serena joins stretch (EP5–EP8).
Synopsis
Ash loses his first Kalos Gym battle to Santalune Gym Leader Viola, the photographer sister of Alexa, while Serena finally catches up with him. In Santalune City Viola photographs Ash and Pikachu, and at the Gym she reveals she is the Leader and Alexa’s sister; Bonnie promptly asks her to take care of Clemont, beginning a running gag.
Viola’s Surskit counters Pikachu’s Quick Attack, Iron Tail and Electro Ball, freezes the battlefield with Ice Beam and knocks Pikachu out with Signal Beam. Fletchling defeats Surskit with Razor Wind after it covers the Gym in Sticky Web, but Viola’s Vivillon blows it into the webs with Psychic and Gust and wins with Solar Beam. Serena, arriving mid-battle, watches from the sidelines.
Viola tells Alexa she sees a strong bond in her photo of Ash but was unimpressed by his battling. Serena returns the backpack Ash left behind and introduces herself, and Alexa offers to train Pikachu and Fletchling against her Noivern’s Gust for the rematch. As the day ends, Serena offers Ash a handkerchief and asks whether he remembers her.
