It first aired in Japan on 31 October 2013 and in the United States on 8 February 2014. It falls within the season’s Arrival in Kalos stretch (EP1–EP4).
From this episode the dub’s Who’s That Pokémon? no longer leads into or out of a commercial break.
Synopsis
Serena chooses Fennekin as her first Pokémon, while Pikachu and a wild Dedenne, separated from Ash’s group, fight off Team Rocket together, and Clemont catches the Dedenne for Bonnie. At Professor Sycamore’s lab Serena receives a Pokédex and picks Fennekin, the partner she had already decided on.
On Route 4 the Dedenne returns to snatch Bonnie’s snacks, and the group chase it through a maze of burrows. Bunnelby and Pikachu corner it underground, but the ground collapses and Pikachu and Dedenne tumble down a cliff. Team Rocket attack the pair with electric nets and Wobbuffet’s Mirror Coat, and James’s Inkay injures Dedenne with Tackle and knocks both into a river with Psybeam.
Fletchling finds them on the riverbank, and Clemont recharges the exhausted Dedenne with his Electricity Generator, which then explodes. When Team Rocket return, Dedenne paralyses Inkay with Nuzzle and adds Thunder Shock to Pikachu’s Thunderbolt to blast them away. Clemont catches Dedenne and lets Bonnie look after it in her satchel. That night Serena mistakes a Vespiquen for a person, Fennekin’s Ember drives it off, and Nurse Joy guides her to a Pokémon Center.
