Lumiose City Pursuit! is the 2nd episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 797th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 802, Bulbapedia code XY002). It first aired in Japan on 17 October 2013 and in the United States on 25 January 2014. It falls within the season’s Arrival in Kalos stretch (EP1–EP4).
Previewed with XY001 on 19 October 2013; its regular premiere followed on 25 January 2014 (the S17 page’s lead says 18 January, against the episode page and Wikipedia), with Ash’s closing line to Froakie redone.
Synopsis
At Professor Sycamore’s lab Ash learns about Mega Evolution, and after Team Rocket’s control collar sends the Professor’s Garchomp rampaging up Prism Tower, Froakie helps save it and then chooses Ash as its Trainer. In Vaniville Town, Serena is thrown by her Rhyhorn again and snaps at her mother, Grace. Sycamore’s assistant Sophie treats Froakie, and the Professor explains that it has had several Trainers, all of whom gave up on it.
Sycamore introduces his gentle Garchomp and his theory that Mega Evolution needs a Mega Stone and a strong bond. Team Rocket sneak in disguised as scientists; when Garchomp shields Froakie, a collar is clamped on her, and she blasts them away with Hyper Beam, flees across the city and climbs Prism Tower. As a news helicopter films, Serena recognises Ash on TV at home.
Ash climbs the tower alone. At the top Froakie’s frubbles glue Garchomp’s feet to the ledge and Pikachu’s Iron Tail cuts the collar, but the ledge gives way, Ash dives after Pikachu, and a masked Trainer’s Mega Blaziken catches them both. The next morning Sycamore gives Ash a Pokédex, and Froakie waits with its Poké Ball to go with him.
