Satoshi and Hikari! Facing a New Adventure!! is the 48th Japanese episode of Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl, the tenth season of the Pokémon anime, and Japanese episode 515 overall (Bulbapedia code DP048). It has never been dubbed into English. It first aired in Japan on 27 September 2007. It falls within the season’s Hearthome City: the Contest & the Tag Battle stretch (EP48–EP52).
Never dubbed: as a clip show with no new story it was skipped by The Pokémon Company International — the first episode it ever skipped — and by every other dub, and it is missing from every English home-video release. Read more about the clip show.
Synopsis
This Japanese-only episode is the second clip show in the Pokémon anime, following AG120, and the first episode of the Diamond and Pearl series not to air outside Japan. It is framed as Ash, Dawn and Brock, on their way to Hearthome City, looking back on the adventures they have shared since arriving in Sinnoh, and it serves as a digest of the series’ first year. It aired on TV Tokyo on 27 September 2007 as the second half of a one-hour special that began with Mira’s flooded-school adventure, and because it consists almost entirely of reused footage, Bulbapedia does not list its staff credits. It keeps the regular opening, “Together”, and the Pop-Up version of “By Your Side ~Hikari’s Theme~” as its ending.
The recap gives prominence to Ash’s progress toward the Sinnoh League, highlighting his victories over Roark at the Oreburgh Gym and Gardenia at the Eterna Gym, and to the introduction of the rivals who define the season: Paul, Ash’s cold and calculating rival, and Zoey, Dawn’s first Contest rival. Characters who appear in flashback include Paul with his Elekid, Chimchar and Starly, Zoey with her Glameow and Shellos, Roark with his Onix, Cranidos and Rampardos, Gardenia with her Roserade, and Kenny, along with the lake guardian Mesprit that Dawn glimpsed on her first day as a Trainer. The travellers’ current teams all feature, from Ash’s Pikachu, Aipom, Staravia and Turtwig to Dawn’s Piplup, Buneary, Pachirisu and Buizel and Brock’s Sudowoodo, Croagunk and Happiny, and Jessie, James and Meowth appear too, although Jessie’s Wobbuffet is absent.
Dawn’s side of the story is represented by figures from her early days as a Coordinator, among them her mother Johanna, Marian, the judges Raoul Contesta and Mr. Sukizo, and Landis and the Pokétch Company president from Jubilife City, while instrumental versions of “By Your Side ~Hikari’s Theme~”, “Advance Adventure”, the opening “Aim to Be a Pokémon Master” and the “Pokémon Symphonic Medley” play beneath the clips. Professor Oak’s Big Pokémon Encyclopedia segment features Torterra. Because it contains no new story, the episode was never dubbed into English or any other language, and it was the first episode skipped by The Pokémon Company International, so the English tenth season numbers DP049 as its 48th episode. The format returned a year and a half later with DP120, another Japan-only look back framed as the group travel toward Snowpoint City.
