Satoshi and Haruka! Heated Battles in Hoenn!! is the 29th Japanese episode of Pokémon: Advanced Battle, the eighth season of the Pokémon anime, and Japanese episode 396 overall (Bulbapedia code AG120). It has never been dubbed into English. It first aired in Japan on 24 March 2005. It falls within the season’s The last Ribbon: Drew, Munchlax & Morrison stretch (EP112–EP120).
Never dubbed: as a clip show with no new story it was skipped by 4Kids and by every other dub, and it is missing from every English home-video release. Read more about the clip show.
Synopsis
This Japanese-only episode is the first clip show in the Pokémon anime. It is framed as Ash and May, on the boat to Slateport City where May hopes to become Top Coordinator, looking back over everything that happened on their journey through Hoenn. Brock and Max are travelling with them, but Team Rocket do not appear at all: it is the first episode since EP001 without Jessie, James and Meowth, and their only absence from the entire Ruby and Sapphire series. Because the episode consists almost entirely of reused footage, Bulbapedia does not list its staff credits, and it carries the same opening and ending themes as the surrounding episodes. It aired in the week before the Grand Festival began, giving Japanese viewers a reminder of the two goals the travellers have been working toward.
Ash’s half of the recap revisits the Gym battles that earned him the eight Badges he needs for the Hoenn League: Roxanne’s Nosepass in Rustboro City, Brawly’s Hariyama in Dewford Town, the battle with May and Max’s father Norman and his Slakoth, Vigoroth and Slaking in Petalburg City, Winona’s Gym in Fortree City, the Double Battle against Tate and Liza’s Solrock and Lunatone in Mossdeep City, and the two-part battle against Juan’s Seaking, Luvdisc, Whiscash and Milotic in Sootopolis City. Two Gym battles, against Wattson and Flannery, are left out. The old scenes are reused with their original audio rather than being re-recorded, in the manner of the Japanese version of Mewtwo Returns, so that each battle plays out exactly as Japanese viewers first saw it on television.
May’s half covers the Contests that won her the five Ribbons she needs for the Grand Festival, from her early defeats by Drew and his Roselia to her clashes with Harley’s Cacturne, Erica’s Jynx and other Coordinators she has met along the way, with the instrumental “Advance Adventure” playing as the narrator discusses her progress; her second Contest victory is omitted. Because it contains no new story, the episode was never dubbed into any language and never aired outside Japan, so the English dub moves straight from the Ribbon Cup caper to the Grand Festival. It is the last episode skipped by the 4Kids dub and the first episode skipped in every dub since the worldwide-banned EP038, which means many viewers outside Japan have never seen it.
