Pacifidlog Jam is the 24th episode of Pokémon: Advanced Battle, the eighth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 389th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 392, Bulbapedia code AG116). It first aired in Japan on 24 February 2005 and in the United States on 8 April 2006. It falls within the season’s The last Ribbon: Drew, Munchlax & Morrison stretch (EP112–EP120).
Aired out of order on 8 April 2006 as a double bill with The Scheme Team, six weeks after US viewers had watched May compete in the Grand Festival that this Ribbon qualifies her for; UK premiere 1 February 2006.
Synopsis
The Battle Round of the Pacifidlog Contest opens with Erica’s Jynx against the Jester, who is really Jessie with Meowth disguised as her Pokémon. Meowth is terrified of Jynx, so the Jester calls for “Transform”, and Meowth frantically swaps costumes: first a Sunflora, then a Kirlia, then an inflatable Wailord. When Jynx hits the Wailord with Psychic, Meowth accidentally punctures the costume, which deflates and exposes the trick, and the judges disqualify the Jester. Jessie and James throw off their disguises and try to net Jynx anyway, but Psychic wraps them in their own net and Jynx’s Hyper Beam blasts them out of the hall. Erica advances to the final without further trouble, while James and Meowth can only grumble about another scheme gone wrong.
May’s Skitty then faces Joshua’s Houndoom in the semi-final, a match between two Coordinators who have become friends over the past day. Swift, Shadow Ball, Blizzard and Flamethrower collide again and again for more than thirty seconds as both Pokémon refuse to give ground, both Coordinators’ points draining steadily on the scoreboard, until a final explosion leaves Houndoom unable to battle and gives May the win. That sets up a final between May and Erica, the two rivals who have been squabbling ever since Erica mistook May’s friendliness toward Joshua for flirting, with May’s place in the Grand Festival riding on the outcome and Joshua cheering from the side. Both Coordinators know that only one of them can leave Pacifidlog with the Ribbon.
In the final, May gambles everything on Skitty’s unpredictable Assist. One after another it calls up String Shot, Razor Leaf, Vine Whip and Petal Dance, with mixed results against Jynx’s powerful Psychic attacks. Skitty’s last Assist produces Fire Spin, which is super effective against the Ice-type, Jynx’s answering Hyper Beam fails, and Skitty finishes with Tackle. May wins the Pacifidlog Ribbon, her fifth, qualifying at last for the Hoenn Grand Festival. Erica apologises for her jealousy, and she and Joshua decide to train apart for a while so that they can return as genuine rivals, while the friends, and May above all, look ahead to Slateport City and the Grand Festival. For the first time May will compete against Drew on the biggest stage in Hoenn.
