Synopsis
On the way to Slateport City for the Grand Festival, the group stop at an island covered in berry trees. Ash bites into a Tamato Berry and is left with lips so swollen and burning that Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center jumps at the sight of him. Outside, his Snorunt’s Ice Beam training remains wildly inaccurate, and a stray blast hits Ash, though at least it soothes the Tamato burn. Team Rocket, earning money as gardeners, are trampled by a wild Munchlax and chase after it, and Jessie spots the Center’s Berry Blenders through a window and starts to hatch a plan to make money from them. Brock, meanwhile, has brought along the Pokéblock recipe book given to him by Natalie earlier in their journey.
Nurse Joy lets the group make Pokéblocks from her garden berries, and May invents “May’s Purple Surprise” from two Pecha, an Oran, a Bluk and a pinch of Tamato. Everyone finds it revolting except a Munchlax that wanders in and devours it. Team Rocket arrive dressed as professional Pokéblock tasters, and while they distract everyone Meowth and Wobbuffet steal the Pokéblocks and the blenders; Jessie, oddly, loves May’s recipe. The local children blame Munchlax, which heads into the garden to gorge on berries. May takes responsibility for it and battles it with Combusken, but Munchlax dodges Fire Spin and Sky Uppercut while napping and snacking. Then James eats a Tamato Berry, runs outside screaming, and his torn bag spills Pokéblocks, exposing the thieves.
Jessie nets Pikachu and the trio take off in their balloon. Combusken’s Fire Spin frees Pikachu and rips open a bag of Pokéblocks, Munchlax leaps up to grab it, and when Jessie drops another bag Munchlax jumps out of the basket, with May tumbling after it as she tries to catch it. Snorunt’s Ice Beam freezes a tree, and the frozen tip pops the balloon, sending Team Rocket blasting off. As Munchlax gobbles up the falling Pokéblocks, May throws a Poké Ball; Munchlax swallows it whole, the ball activates inside its mouth, and May has caught her sixth Pokémon, the first Generation IV Pokémon seen in the main series, before the group continue toward the Grand Festival. Munchlax’s bottomless appetite, already on full display, will remain a running feature of May’s travels from now on.
