Double Crisis is one of the more unusual releases of the XY era: a compact 34-card special expansion built entirely around the clash between Team Magma and Team Aqua. Released in English on March 25, 2015, it carried the villainous-team rivalry that ran through the Hoenn remakes (Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire) and the preceding Primal Clash set, and turned it into a set where every single card wears a team’s colours.
What really set Double Crisis apart was how you got it. There was no booster box — the seven-card packs were sold only inside special blister products, which made it a genuine oddity on the shelf and a fun target for collectors.
From the official set description:
Rival Ambitions: Aqua vs. Magma! Two teams of villains emerge from their hideouts to clash over the fate of the world in Pokémon TCG: Double Crisis! Team Aqua brings sheer brawn and willpower while Team Magma leverages logic, and both are willing to move land and sea to accomplish their goals.
Two Teams, One Set
Every Pokémon in Double Crisis belongs to one side of the feud — a “Team Magma’s” or “Team Aqua’s” version of a Hoenn favourite. Team Magma fields Camerupt, Aggron, Claydol and its legendary Groudon-EX; Team Aqua answers with Walrein, Muk, Sharpedo and Kyogre-EX. The two sides even share Pokémon: there’s a Team Aqua’s Poochyena and a Team Magma’s Poochyena, a Team Aqua’s Mightyena and a Team Magma’s Mightyena, replaying the rivalry right down to the pre-evolutions. Rounding it out are team-specific Grunts and Admins, Great Balls, Secret Base stadiums and a pair of special team Energy cards.
The Set You Couldn’t Buy by the Box
Double Crisis broke the usual rules of a TCG release. Its seven-card booster packs were never sold in booster boxes — the only way to get them was inside dedicated Double Crisis blister products, including character blisters (pairing Groudon with Courtney and Kyogre with Shelly) and Team Magma / Team Aqua collector’s pin four-pack blisters. That blister-only distribution made pulling both legendary EX cards harder than in a normal set, and it’s a big part of why Double Crisis still feels special to collectors today.
The Legendary EX and Team-Locked Decks
The two headliners are Team Aqua’s Kyogre-EX (6/34) and Team Magma’s Groudon-EX (15/34) — the set’s only EX cards and its clear chase pulls. Around them, the mechanics reward loyalty: the Grunts, Admins, Great Balls and Secret Bases each interact only with their own team’s Pokémon, and the Double Aqua Energy and Double Magma Energy provide two units of energy but power only matching-team attackers. The result nudged players toward mono-team decks, with the aggressive, low-cost Team Magma’s Groudon-EX seeing the most competitive play.

Products & Print Versions
Because there was no Double Crisis booster box, the set reached players entirely through blister products released on March 25, 2015. These included single-pack character blisters fronted by Groudon & Courtney or Kyogre & Shelly, and the Team Magma and Team Aqua collector’s pin four-pack blisters, each bundling boosters with a metal team pin. Every pack held seven cards. As a modern-era set, there’s no “1st Edition” print — that concept ended back in the vintage WotC days.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
With no secret rares or full-art cards, Double Crisis keeps things simple: the two legendary EX cards sit at the top of the want-list. Team Aqua’s Kyogre-EX (6/34) and Team Magma’s Groudon-EX (15/34) are the headline pulls, followed by the set’s Rare Holo evolutions — Camerupt, Walrein, Muk, Claydol, Aggron and Sharpedo.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Team Magma’s Groudon-EX (15/34) was the set’s standout in competitive play — a hard-hitting Fighting attacker with a low enough cost to pressure opponents early, slotting neatly into the aggressive Fighting decks of the 2015 Standard format. Team Aqua’s Kyogre-EX (6/34) offered a bulkier Water option. Because the team-locked support cards didn’t cross over, Double Crisis decks tended to commit fully to one side of the war.
Trivia & Points of Interest

- It’s one of very few modern sets never sold in booster boxes — blister products were the only way to get it.
- The set’s tagline was “Rival Ambitions: Aqua vs. Magma!”
- Nearly every card carries a “Team Magma’s” or “Team Aqua’s” prefix; even the two Double Energy cards pick a side.
