Synopsis
On a class trip to Malie City, a sudden gust sends Mallow’s Shaymin, Lana’s Sandy and Ash’s Meltan chasing after a hair ornament, and the lost trio must fend off Team Rocket until their Trainers find them. Lillie explains that Malie City was built in the style of the Johto region, and a gust of wind sends Sandy dashing into traffic until Shaymin pulls it to safety. The class meets their guide, Charlie Charma, a boy in ninja garb who explains that ninja attire is a local tradition, and they change into outfits for Malie Garden. When Sandy disrupts a procession of Eevee, Charlie vanishes behind a smoke bomb, leaving the students to explore on their own. Meanwhile, Team Rocket’s three-in-one Combee doughnuts are not selling, but Jessie spots Shaymin during the class’s snack break and the trio make plans.
Another gust snatches Mallow’s hair ornament, and Shaymin chases it, followed by Sandy and Meltan. Ash sends Lycanroc to track them while Lillie and Lana ask Nurse Joy to broadcast a citywide alert. The ornament snags on a tall wooden post, and Meltan and Sandy ask the garden’s Pokémon for help before Sandy finds Shaymin by its scent, with the ornament retrieved. Team Rocket trap the trio in a giant spherical cage made of a steel alloy that James boasts cannot be eaten, but Meltan dissolves a bar and they escape, only to be cornered by Wobbuffet, Mimikyu and Mareanie. Mareanie poisons Sandy with Sludge Bomb, and Meltan’s Flash Cannons miss. Shaymin’s frightened cry brings Mallow running, and Lycanroc knocks Jessie to the ground as Ash and Lana arrive.
Mareanie’s Sludge Bomb has no effect on Meltan’s Steel typing, and Meltan’s Headbutt lands squarely. Shaymin cures Sandy with Aromatherapy, and Sandy’s Double-Edge knocks Mareanie out. Mimikyu’s Wood Hammer clashes with Pikachu’s Iron Tail, until Stufful brings a Bewear-shaped kite and Bewear straps Team Rocket to it and runs off, only for Malie City’s fierce winds to blow her away into the distance. Mallow realises that Shaymin ran off to retrieve her ornament, and the reunited friends return to the Pokémon Center, where Charlie reveals that he is a Trainer at the Kantonian Gym and invites everyone to visit the next day, to Ash’s delight. In a final scene, Team Rocket’s kite is stuck in a tall tree, and Bewear, who has run a long way, only now notices that she has been pulling an empty string.
