Synopsis
Lillie discovers her missing father Mohn’s secret study, inherits his Z-Ring and finds an inactive Magearna he once bought for her, resolving to restore it. At Aether Paradise, Lillie and Gladion search for Mohn’s research notes, and Faba tearfully assumes that Mohn is dead, though the siblings insist that he is alive. Lusamine admits that she has felt guilty for never telling her children about their father, and she flies them to the family mansion on Melemele Island. There Hobbes opens a hidden room behind a bookshelf: Mohn’s study. Lusamine describes Mohn as a brilliant researcher and a devoted husband and father, and entrusts the room to her children until he returns. Lillie finds a Z-Ring that Hala once gave Mohn when he came to Alola to study Ultra Wormholes, and Lusamine explains that Mohn’s Pokémon ran away after he vanished.
Lillie comforts her mother, though she squirms out of a hug, insisting that she is not a baby. Behind the twin doors of an ornate cabinet she finds Magearna, a rusted Artificial Pokémon that Mohn bought at an antique shop as a gift for her but that never worked. The next day, Lillie shows the Z-Ring to her classmates and explains that she wants to use it until her father comes home, and Professor Kukui takes the class to see Hala in Iki Town. Hala remembers Mohn and his Zoroark as tough rivals for his Hariyama. Sensing Lillie’s resolve, he asks her to perform Subzero Slammer in front of him. Lillie fastens the ring, inserts her Icium Z, recites the chant and strikes the pose, and Z-Power flows into Snowy, but it disperses at the last moment.
Lillie reassures the disappointed Snowy that they will grow stronger together, and Hala, impressed by her determination, grants her permission to use her father’s Z-Ring. At home that night, Lillie talks to Magearna about her day and asks it to be her friend, and Snowy notices a faint light flicker in its eyes and heart, though Lillie misses it. Looking closer, Lillie finds a book hidden behind Magearna: her father’s journal, with a drawing of Magearna and diagrams of its inner workings. Lusamine and Gladion appear in the doorway, and Lillie tells them about Hala’s permission and asks to look after Magearna in the hope of making it move again, which her mother allows. That night Lillie reads her father’s account of how he found Magearna and falls asleep with the journal in her hands.
