Synopsis
Sophocles digs up a buried Ultra Beast that he believes is the starship from an old moon legend, and the Ultra Guardians must free Celesteela before the gas it has stored launches it like a rocket. Camping on Bamboo Hill with his parents, Sophocles slips out under the full moon with Togedemaru and Charjabug and tells them the tale of Celeste: long ago, an elderly couple found a giant bamboo shoot with a baby’s face that had fallen from the sky, but as it grew the plants around it withered, and when angry villagers attacked, the couple protected it until it turned into a great ship, flew back to the moon and left a thriving bamboo grove behind. His Pokémon are unimpressed, but Togedemaru tumbles into a strange clearing where no bamboo grows, and Sophocles digs around a metal point until he uncovers a face that smiles when the moonlight touches it.
The next morning, Sophocles boasts that he has found the legendary starship, and his doubtful classmates agree to look after school—only to be handed shovels. They spend the day excavating, with Charjabug calling in a swarm of Grubbin to help, while the motionless creature smiles only at moonrise. Rotom cannot identify it, Kiawe suspects an Ultra Beast, and Lillie wants to tell her mother, but Sophocles, who has named it Celeste, begs for more time and learns that it has been buried for about two hundred years. When someone reports it, the Ultra Guardians are summoned. Wicke explains that the Ultra Beast is called Celesteela, a name taken from the same legend, and that it has been storing flammable gas underground that could launch it with destructive fire. Nearby, Team Rocket overhear talk of a “rocket Pokémon” and decide it must be theirs.
At the site, the Guardians discover that Celesteela’s roots run too deep for a Beast Ball to catch it, and its launch is only minutes away. Team Rocket attack in a Meowth-shaped mecha to grab the Ultra Beast, and Ash and Kiawe hold them off while the others use their Ride Pokémon’s attacks to raise a barrier of ice and stone around the engines before everyone retreats. Team Rocket seize the chance to throw a giant punch at Celesteela at the very moment its engines ignite; the blast knocks the mecha’s fist away and wrecks the machine, and Bewear arrives riding the flying fist to rescue the trio. Celesteela rises into the sky and leaves the bamboo grove unharmed, and Sophocles watches it disappear beyond the atmosphere, feeling both happy and sad to see his starship go.
