Synopsis

Sophocles, Ash and Kiawe form a team for a Charjabug race and beat Sophocles’s rival Horacio and his Shiny Charjabug by turning teamwork and String Shot to their advantage. Kiawe, Ash and Sophocles watch an advertisement for a Charjabug race, and Sophocles explains that he needs a team of three. Ash and Kiawe join, and Sophocles shows off the race kit and assigns roles, but a test run goes badly and Sophocles blames his Charjabug’s Mild Nature. Kiawe sets up training to build teamwork while Sophocles tunes the car, and their times improve. On race day they meet Horacio, leader of Team Red Comet, whose Shiny Charjabug races in a red car modelled on a mobile suit, and Team Rocket enter a fake Charjabug racer. The announcer, Anna, explains the rules: three terrains with pit stops between them, and obstacle Pokémon along the way.

A crash on the first corner takes out several racers, but Ash avoids it. On the first terrain a Boldore raises cliffs across the track, and Team Rocket cheat their way through to take the lead. Ash and the others are stopped at the cliff until Sophocles suggests a way over, which the other teams copy. At the first pit stop Kiawe changes the tyres and refills the Moomoo Milk, and Ash puts on Safety Goggles. On the desert terrain Meowth attacks Red Comet, which only boosts their speed, and Meowth is ejected, disqualifying Team Rocket, whom Bewear removes from the course. Red Comet’s Charjabug tires but makes it out of the desert, with Ash and Team Electric Princess close behind.

On the city terrain a Castform turns rain into hail, making the track icy. Team Electric Princess loses control and skids towards Sophocles’s Charjabug, and Ash dives in to protect it and is knocked out. Sophocles and Kiawe help Ash, and Team Electric Princess apologises, while Red Comet struggles for grip on the ice. Sophocles takes over as runner, and his Charjabug uses String Shot on the tyres and on Sophocles’s shoes for traction, overtaking Red Comet. Sophocles’s team crosses the line first, and in the winners’ interview Kiawe advertises Moomoo Milk before the team receives a shared prize. Horacio’s Charjabug is the first Shiny Pokémon of the Sun & Moon series, and the episode is the anime’s first to mention Natures, although the English dub removes the references.
