Synopsis

In Jacore Town, a gentleman thief who only picks one locksmith’s locks turns out to be that locksmith’s former apprentice, and the two are reconciled when the thief risks his life in a burning Pokémon Center. At Team Flare’s headquarters, Xerosic irradiates the captive Z2, and far away Squishy senses its pain, until Bonnie cheers it up with her song. The group checks into a hotel exhibiting a famous gem, and that night an alarm brings them to the exhibit, where the gem’s padlock hangs open but nothing has been taken. A masked figure introduces himself from the skylight as “Master Thief Keyes,” leaves a calling card and escapes. Officer Jenny explains that Keyes only ever opens locks made by the locksmith Ed and never steals anything, and Team Rocket decide to recruit him as their lock-picking apprentice.

A Binacle named Righty clamps onto Bonnie’s head, and Ed arrives to claim it. He explains that his apprentice Locke quit years ago after Ed taught him that lock picking needs patience and kindness, like persuading a person to open up, and that Righty’s partner Lefty left with him; Righty has been searching for them ever since. Ed insists he does not care, but Bonnie offers to look after Righty overnight. In a forest, Locke, who is Keyes, tells Lefty that Ed will have to recognise his skill, before Team Rocket bind his arms and kidnap him. The next morning Clemont’s Binacle Finder, attached to Righty, tracks Lefty to the Pokémon Center, where Team Rocket order Locke to pick the door so they can steal the patients.

Locke pretends to obey, then has Lefty strike Meowth with Brick Break and runs, vowing never to steal. Team Rocket’s Seed Bomb and Psybeam hit a generator, and the Pokémon Center bursts into flames. Locke and Lefty rush inside to save the patients’ Poké Balls while Greninja’s Water Shuriken and Righty’s Water Gun fight the blaze, but the heat warps the door lock and traps them. Righty carries Bonnie to fetch Ed, who calls Locke while he works. Locke confesses that he became Keyes to earn Ed’s respect, and Ed reveals that he knew all along: only he and Locke can pick his locks, and he calls Keyes a fine locksmith. Moved, Locke opens the door and everyone escapes. Officer Jenny arrests Locke but plans to release him with a warning, Ed promises his door will always be open, and the group heads for Gloire City.
