Synopsis
On the way to Joule Town’s Zapdos Festival, Ash is cut off from his friends while carrying medicine through a mountain cave, and Noibat evolves into Noivern to save Hawlucha from a furious Zapdos. Clemont is excitedly telling the others about the festival’s legend when a Zapdos flies through a stormy sky and a lightning-struck tree blocks the road. Taking shelter in a cave, the group meets Stan, a rescue worker whose van crashed after lightning loosened a rock, and who has broken his leg. He asks them to deliver medicine to the hospital in the next town. Hawlucha’s Karate Chop clears a boulder, Noibat’s Supersonic finds the way at each fork and Braixen lights the tunnels. Outside, Team Rocket try to capture Zapdos with a Ferrothorn-shaped mecha and fail, and the shaking makes the cave ceiling collapse.
Hawlucha pulls Noibat to safety, but the rubble splits the party: Serena, Clemont and Bonnie take Stan back towards town while Ash carries on alone with the medicine, Pikachu, Noibat and Hawlucha. Noibat is frightened by the darkness at first, but Ash and Pikachu calm it, and it keeps guiding them with Supersonic until they see daylight; at the exit, however, Zapdos attacks. Inside, Ash finds Team Rocket cowering and learns that they tried to capture the bird. When Ash steps out to calm Zapdos, it attacks again. Talonflame fights bravely but is knocked out by the type disadvantage, and Hawlucha volunteers to buy time for the others. Its High Jump Kick seems to land hard, but Zapdos shrugs it off and blasts Hawlucha through the air with a super-effective attack.
Noibat flies after Hawlucha and evolves into Noivern as it catches its friend, then turns on Zapdos with newly learned Boomburst. Zapdos stays out of reach, so Ash has Noivern weave through the rock pillars using Supersonic, and Boomburst finally sends the bird crashing into a rock. Team Rocket seize the moment and capture Zapdos in their mecha, but Boomburst and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blast them away and destroy the machine, and Noivern frees Zapdos from its ropes with Acrobatics. Grateful, Zapdos clears the storm and flies away, and Ash delivers the medicine to Joule Town’s doctor. His friends arrive soon afterwards with news that Stan’s injuries are not serious, and they are amazed to find Noibat evolved and eating berries in a tree. That night the festival fireworks begin, Zapdos crackles across the sky among them before flying off, and the friends settle in to enjoy the celebration.
