Synopsis

Lost in an abandoned mine, Clemont and Bonnie tell how Clemont caught his first Pokémon, a Bunnelby that shared food with stray city Pokémon living in an old subway train. Team Rocket’s pit trap drops the group underground, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt eventually blasts the villains off, and the collapsing ground leaves the friends in an abandoned mine. Following the train tracks, Bonnie recalls another time they were lost underground, and the siblings explain. Years ago, after Clembot locked Clemont out of the Lumiose Gym, a Bunnelby snatched the apple Bonnie had brought him, and they chased it into an abandoned subway tunnel. At a well-kept old station they found it sharing the apple with Patrat, Trubbish, Delcatty, Skitty and Zigzagoon, which sheltered in an old train car.

Then a Diggersby arrived and drove them all out. Bunnelby fought back, but Diggersby’s Mud Shot, Super Fang and Double Kick overwhelmed it, and with all his own Pokémon at the Gym, Clemont could only pull it to safety with his Aipom Arm. He treated Bunnelby with a Super Potion, and when it wanted a rematch at once, he advised strategy over strength, acting out the battle with Bonnie playing Diggersby to show it how to dodge Hammer Arm with Dig and defend with its ears. In the rematch Bunnelby made Diggersby crash into a pole, blocked a charge with a stone tile lifted by its ears and sent it flying with Double Slap. Diggersby ran off in shame, and Bonnie declared that Clemont and Bunnelby made a great team.

When demolition began to bring down the station, the Pokémon refused to abandon their home, so Clemont moved the whole train with his Running Generator, powered by Bonnie and the Pokémon on a treadmill. Diggersby returned to clear a boulder and made up with Bunnelby, and Bunnelby’s Mud Shot flipped a switch to send the train to a safe station above ground where no construction was planned. As the siblings left, Bunnelby looked crestfallen until its friends urged it to follow them, and it became Clemont’s first non-Electric-type Pokémon. Back in the present, Bunnelby digs the group out of the dead-end tunnel, and Bonnie adds that Clemont cried with joy when he caught it, which he angrily denies, insisting that she is exaggerating.
