Synopsis
Ash challenges Valerie at the Laverre Gym and, after Fletchinder beats Sylveon but falls to Spritzee’s Trick Room tactics, Hawlucha shatters the Trick Room with a newly learned X-Scissor and wins him the Fairy Badge, his sixth. The day after watching Sawyer lose to Valerie, the group returns to the Laverre Gym with Sawyer and his Treecko along to watch. Four Furisode Girls lead them into the arena, and Kali announces a two-on-two battle. Valerie sends out Sylveon and speaks to it in the Pokémon language, explaining that she has always wanted to become a Pokémon herself and so learned to communicate with them. Ash chooses Fletchinder, which lands a Steel Wing before Sylveon replies with Disarming Voice, catches it in its feelers and swings it around while hitting it with Fairy Wind.
Fletchinder breaks free with Flame Charge, raising its Speed, and wins the round when its Steel Wing clashes with Sylveon’s Giga Impact. Valerie’s second Pokémon is Spritzee, which defeated Sawyer’s Bagon the day before, and Ash knows only one of its moves. Spritzee sets up Trick Room, which lets slower Pokémon move first, and Clemont warns that every Flame Charge now makes Fletchinder slower in effect. Ash keeps using Flame Charge anyway, taking direct hits to lull Valerie into relaxing; when Trick Room ends, a lightning-fast Steel Wing strikes Spritzee, but Spritzee survives and knocks Fletchinder out with Moonblast, leaving the score at one to one. To everyone’s surprise Ash sends out Hawlucha, whose Fighting moves are weak against Fairy types.
Spritzee dodges its Karate Chop, sets up another Trick Room and hits it with Moonblast. Valerie asks whether Ash can also talk to Pokémon, and he explains that he senses what they feel rather than translating their words. Hawlucha’s first X-Scissor misses and strikes the Trick Room barrier, so Ash tells it to grab Spritzee just as Spritzee lands a Gyro Ball. Using the momentum, Hawlucha bounces off the wall and spins into an X-Scissor that cuts through Dazzling Gleam and shatters Trick Room; Clemont realises that the Bug-type move works so well against the Psychic-type technique. Hawlucha finishes Spritzee with High Jump Kick, and Valerie presents the Fairy Badge. Sawyer asks Ash to teach him how he battles, and Ash, unable to put it into words, suggests they battle again instead.
