Synopsis
In Laverre City the group meets Sawyer, a rookie Trainer who is inspired by Ash during an interrupted Double Battle, while Serena and Bonnie model in Gym Leader Valerie’s fashion show and Sawyer loses his Gym challenge to Valerie’s Spritzee. Ash is eager to battle, and Serena wants to meet Valerie, who is also a famous fashion designer. At the Gym, girls in Valerie’s costumes prepare for an event, and both Sawyer and Ash are told that the Gym is closed for the day. Bonnie embarrasses Clemont by asking the receptionist to marry him. Sawyer recognises Clemont from their earlier Lumiose Gym battle, and on hearing that Ash already has five Badges, including the Voltage Badge, he resolves to catch up.
While Serena and Bonnie admire Valerie’s fashion displays with Braixen and Dedenne, Ash challenges Sawyer to a Double Battle in front of the Gym, with Clemont refereeing: Hawlucha and Frogadier against Treecko and Bagon. Bagon’s hard head works well at first, but Hawlucha wears it down with repeated Karate Chops, and when Leech Seed and Fire Fang close in on Hawlucha, Frogadier’s Water Pulse lets it escape. Sawyer, who studies everything Ash does, praises the way his Pokémon cover for each other. Frogadier dodges two Bullet Seeds and defeats Treecko with Cut, but just as the duel resumes, the battle is interrupted when Valerie’s fashion show begins. Valerie recruits Serena and Bonnie as stand-in models, because her regular models could not attend, and Serena is thrilled to meet her idol.
The show features dresses inspired by Azumarill, Meowstic, Gothorita and Chimecho before Serena and Bonnie walk the runway with Braixen and Dedenne in designs based on Florges and Chingling; Valerie explains that all her designs are based on Pokémon. On the advice of Linnea, the girl who turned Sawyer away, Valerie invites him onstage for a Gym battle. Bagon’s Dragon Breath has no effect on her Fairy-type Spritzee, and Spritzee’s aerial agility makes Bagon’s back-to-back Headbutts miss, copied from Hawlucha’s tactic. A single Dazzling Gleam ends the match, and Sawyer does not earn the Fairy Badge. At the Pokémon Center Ash talks excitedly about his own battle with Valerie the next day, then trains outside with Sawyer as the others come out to cheer.
