A Slippery Encounter! is the 7th episode of Pokémon the Series: XY Kalos Quest, the eighteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 850th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 855, Bulbapedia code XY055). It first aired in Japan on 8 January 2015 and in the United States on 21 March 2015. It falls within the season’s Goomy & the Coumarine Gym stretch (EP55–EP59).
Synopsis
A dehydrated Goomy falls onto Ash’s head, and after it bravely shields him from Team Rocket and fights back with Bide, Ash catches it. Climbing a rocky hill towards Coumarine City, the group is startled when a fleeing Swanna drops an unconscious Goomy on Ash. The Pokédex calls it the weakest Dragon-type species, and Clemont realises it is drying out, since Goomy is mostly water; Serena revives it with a drink, and Ash runs it down to a river, tumbling in with it. Goomy panics at the sight of Clemont’s Dedenne, because Dragon types are weak to Fairy types, and it shows a temper too: when Serena calls it slimy, it soaks her with Rain Dance until she apologises. Then it leads the hungry group into the forest, where Chespin’s Pin Missile knocks down apples and annoys an Ariados.
Clemont’s Pokémon Translator Mark 2 reads Goomy’s mind and shows that a swarm of Bug types attacked its home and drove Swanna to flee, before the machine fails and, after Clemont hits it, predictably explodes, just as Bonnie expected. Goomy nibbles Clemont’s ear and then Serena’s in approval, and Clemont concludes that it fled from a large battle. Goomy then chats with Pikachu in a language the humans cannot follow, while Team Rocket, spying from nearby, decide that the slimy Dragon type is worthless and that Pikachu remains their target. Team Rocket then drop an electrified rope net that absorbs Pikachu’s Thunderbolt and, although they earlier dismissed Goomy as worthless, carry it off in a cage together with Pikachu behind a smoke bomb; Frogadier cuts everyone free and Fletchinder takes to the air to search.
Pikachu headbutts the bars until a gap opens; Goomy squeezes out and slathers Pikachu in slime so that he can slip through as well, and the two pass his shine off as sweat when Team Rocket check on them. Pikachu flees with Goomy on his back, and Goomy’s Rain Dance sends James sprawling. When Jessie’s Pumpkaboo fires Shadow Ball, Ash shields the pair with his own body, and Team Rocket’s machine is smashed by Iron Tail. Inkay’s Psybeam confuses Pikachu and Fletchinder into fighting each other, and when Dark Pulse and Psybeam fly at Ash, Goomy steps in front of him, endures the blows and retaliates with Bide. Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts Team Rocket off. Goomy still hides from Dedenne, but when Ash asks whether it wants to become strong, it nuzzles his head, and Ash catches it.
