Butterfree and Me! is the 33rd episode of Pokémon: BW Adventures in Unova and Beyond, the sixteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 783rd episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 788, Bulbapedia code BW130). It first aired in Japan on 13 June 2013 and in the United States on 14 September 2013. It falls within the season’s Island hopping stretch (EP129–EP133).
Synopsis
On Wayfarer Island, Ash helps a sleepy Caterpie that was left behind by its migrating flock evolve into Butterfree and rejoin the others. The Caterpie reminds Ash of his own Butterfree, released long ago, so he trades Krookodile to Professor Oak’s lab for Leavanny to help it train.
At first Ash pushes too hard and the Caterpie runs away, but he apologises and they train at its pace with naps, berries and String Shot swings through the trees. It saves Ash from a fall, receives a leaf hood from Leavanny and, after helping drive off a wild Ursaring, evolves into Metapod.
A Butterfree flock arrives a week early and will leave at sunrise, but the sleepy Metapod has still not evolved. When Team Rocket snatch Pikachu and Metapod and knock Ash off their balloon, Metapod evolves into Butterfree, lowers Ash to safety with Confusion and frees Pikachu with Psybeam; Psybeam and Thunderbolt then blast the villains away. At dawn a tearful Ash sends his new friend off with the flock.
