Ancient Family Matters! is the 3rd episode of Pokémon DP: Galactic Battles, the twelfth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 570th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 574, Bulbapedia code DP107). It first aired in Japan on 18 December 2008 and in the United States on 23 May 2009. It falls within the season’s Canalave & the Mine Badge stretch (EP105–EP109).
Synopsis
At the Canalave Gym, Ash discovers that Gym Leader Byron is Roark’s father, and the two Leaders are too busy arguing over fossils to accept a challenge. Roark has come to bring his father home for his parents’ anniversary, but the pair end up battling to prove whose revived Pokémon is better, Roark’s Rampardos or Byron’s Bastiodon.
Their clash of Zen Headbutt, Head Smash, Iron Defense and Flash Cannon is interrupted by an alarm: Team Rocket have tunnelled into Byron’s fossil room and escaped with his collection in a drill mecha. The group follow the tunnel, and Byron scolds the thieves mainly for digging with machines instead of by hand.
Working together, Bastiodon shields Rampardos from falling rocks, and their combined attacks open holes in the mecha for Pikachu’s Thunderbolt to blow it apart. Byron then shows Roark his most prized fossil, a leaf that Roark found and gave him as a child, and father and son make up. Because Bastiodon needs rest, Ash’s Gym battle is set for the next day.
