Synopsis

On a rocky trail near Solaceon Town, Ash’s Turtwig battles a Trainer named Alan and his Nosepass, dodging a barrage of Zap Cannons until one blast knocks it onto a rock at the edge of the path. When Ash suggests moving somewhere safer, Alan refuses: he wants to battle near Mount Coronet, whose special magnetic field, as Brock explains, is what makes Nosepass evolve. Ash agrees to carry on. Turtwig dodges a Rock Slide and trades Tackles with Nosepass until both are badly hurt, and then Nosepass glows and evolves into Probopass. Dawn checks it with her Pokédex and Ash congratulates Alan, but before the match can resume, a helmet drops onto Probopass’s head and covers its eyes, and its Mini-Noses turn on Alan. Team Rocket reveal that they are controlling Probopass by remote, make it break up the ground and fly off with it, leaving Alan in despair until Ash and his friends urge him not to give up.

By a river, Jessie and James build more helmets, Jessie daydreaming about an army of stolen Probopass. Brock tracks the missing Pokémon with his compass, whose needle swings as the magnetic field shifts, and the friends find the trio’s camp. Alan wants to charge straight in, but Brock warns that he would only be attacked, so Ash sends Buizel across the river to steal the remote. Buizel fumbles it, Wobbuffet wrestles him for it and Staravia knocks it into the air, but as Ash leaps for it, Dustox’s Whirlwind dumps him in the water. The remote lands on Probopass’s antenna and explodes, sending Probopass berserk: it blasts Team Rocket away with Zap Cannon and turns on Ash’s group. Pikachu’s Thunderbolt only drives it off, so Alan climbs onto his rampaging partner and asks Pikachu to shock them both, but even that fails to break the helmet’s control.

Spotting a river below, Alan signals for a combined Thunderbolt and Water Gun. As Probopass halts at a cliff edge, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt, Buizel’s Water Gun and Pachirisu’s Discharge knock Probopass and Alan over into the water. Probopass sinks to the riverbed, where Alan pries the helmet off, and Buizel dives in after them when Alan fails to resurface. Team Rocket return with a net launcher that Pikachu’s Thunderbolt cannot stop and send out Seviper and Carnivine, but Alan, Probopass and Buizel surface with Alan’s fighting spirit restored. Buizel’s SonicBoom cuts the group free, Probopass’s Magnet Bomb knocks out Seviper and Carnivine, Pikachu adds Volt Tackle, and a combined Discharge and Zap Cannon from Pachirisu and Probopass blasts Team Rocket off again. Ash and Alan then pick up their interrupted battle. The episode is the anime’s first mention of location-based evolution, a mechanic introduced in the Generation IV games.
