Synopsis

In the dark of night, a towering old tree is home to a whole community of Seedot and their evolved forms, and when one Seedot kicks a sleeping Nuzleaf off its branch, the Nuzleaf drops onto a passing Vileplume without waking. By morning the Vileplume’s pollen has made it sneeze, the startled Vileplume has bolted, and the Nuzleaf wakes far from home, tumbling off a cliff as it tries to find its way back. At the foot of the mountain that separates them from Oreburgh City, Ash wants to push on but Dawn insists on resting at the Pokémon Center, where Brock notices how much Bonsly has grown since moving on to solid food. A sudden gust leads them to the injured Nuzleaf, which drives Nurse Joy off with Razor Leaf, and Brock’s attempt to flirt with her earns him a Poison Jab from Croagunk.

Brock then shows his skill as a Breeder: he hides his hands, crouches to the Nuzleaf’s eye level, plays a soothing tune on a leaf whistle and has Bonsly taste the Oran Berries first, until the Nuzleaf eats its fill and lets Joy treat its wound. Joy explains that the only home of the Seedot line in the area is a thousand-year-old tree nearby, so the group set off to return it. On the way, Bonsly and the Nuzleaf become friends, the Nuzleaf believing Bonsly is a fellow Grass type. Team Rocket turn up with Meowth in a Shiftry costume, claiming to be looking for the same tree, until Dawn’s Pokédex identifies him as a Meowth. The trio net Bonsly and the Nuzleaf from their balloon, Brock clings to the net, and Seviper’s Haze keeps Staravia from following.

Tied to a tree, Brock offers to turn Team Rocket’s meagre garnish into a proper meal, and while they gobble it down he slips away with the cage. Bonsly’s first Double-Edge only bends a bar and it bursts into tears, but with Brock’s encouragement the second breaks the cage open, and Bonsly dances for joy, glows and evolves into Sudowoodo. Brock helps his water-shy new Sudowoodo carry the Nuzleaf across a rushing river, but Team Rocket catch up on the far bank. Croagunk and Seviper knock each other out after Croagunk’s Poison Sting pops the balloon, and Sudowoodo overcomes its fear to beat Carnivine with Double-Edge, Flail and a mimicked Bullet Seed while Ash and Dawn arrive to admire it. A real Shiftry then appears, sees through Meowth’s lies and pops the trio’s Wobbuffet-shaped balloon with Razor Wind, catching the falling Nuzleaf on a gust. Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts Team Rocket off, and the Nuzleaf goes home.
