Synopsis

At the Jubilife Pokémon Center, Dawn models her Contest dress for her mother over the videophone, but Johanna notices the matching choker is missing. It turns up wrapped around the tail of a Glameow, whose Trainer Zoey found it in the dressing room and returns it before slipping away. On the practice field, Piplup shows off a new trick, a Peck charged with stored energy that makes its beak glow and lengthen, until Aipom bounds between the two Pokémon and puts on a show of its own with Focus Punch and a giant star made of Double Team and Swift. Brock realises Aipom wants to perform, so Ash decides to enter the Contest too. At the registration desk both receive Contest Passes, Ribbon cases, rulebooks, Ball Capsules and Seals, and Dawn shows the boys how a Heart Seal gives Piplup a dramatic entrance.

Jessie has entered as well, disguised as the pigtailed “Jessilina”, while a penniless James decides to make money selling fake Seals. That night Dawn cannot sleep and sits on the balcony with Piplup and Buneary, holding her mother’s first Ribbon and admitting her nerves until her Pokémon cheer her up. Next morning Marian opens the Contest and introduces the judges, Raoul Contesta, Mr. Sukizo and Nurse Joy. Zoey helps Dawn with her hair in the dressing room and reveals she has won one Ribbon from three Contests, and when Dawn boldly declares that she will win, Zoey promises to meet her in the final. Zoey’s Misdreavus appears from a Smoke Seal, clears its Double Team copies with Confuse Ray and finishes with a dazzling Shock Wave.

Outside, James and Meowth are chased by customers angry about the fake Seals. On stage, Jessilina’s Carnivine bursts from a Heart Seal and shreds a shattered lollipop with Bullet Seed, but when ordered to use Bite it chomps Jessie’s head, and she shrieks in front of the audience. Ash’s Aipom breaks open the stars of a Star Seal with Swift, then strikes every Double Team copy with a spinning Focus Punch and lands neatly on its tail. Finally Dawn steps out, freezes for a moment, then recovers and sends out Piplup, which uses Bubble Beam to hold the Foamy Seal’s bubbles in the air before popping every one with a charged Peck. The judges praise its speed, and watching on television, Johanna allows that it was not bad. Dawn is simply relieved it is over, but Zoey reminds her that the real test is still to come, and the four Coordinators wait anxiously for the results.
