This article is from the first issue of Planet GB, a UK magazine dedicated to Game Boy coverage. This Pokémon preview was published in the Summer of 1999 edition before the UK had any form of Pokémon videogame released. Even the magazines at the time were encouraging their readers to approach importers and get US copies of the games as they’d already been out in the States for a while at this point. For those who were holding firm for the official releases however, previews like this one simply had to do!
What’s inside
Alex Bickham’s six-page feature, Monsters Everywhere!, introduces Pokémon to British Game Boy owners months before the official UK launch: what Pokémon is, how the two-cartridge idea works, trading at the Cable Club and the craze in Japan. Running along the bottom of the pages, “The Creature Feature” profiles Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Metapod, Butterfree, Hitmonlee and Nidoran, and the feature also includes a head-to-head challenge and a competition.
