Synopsis
Sophocles and his Vikavolt enter the Fini Cup Vikavolt race against his old rival Horacio, and his kindness during the race earns him the Buginium Z and his own Z-Ring from Hapu. Sophocles arrives at school with Vikavolt, both wearing VR headsets and matching armour, and announces that he will compete for the Buginium Z even though he has no Z-Ring. In practice, Vikavolt dives too fast and spins him around or overshoots to sip tree sap, and Sophocles wears the headset all day to see the world through its eyes. At home he studies weather forecasts until he is overwhelmed, and Vikavolt comforts him. On race day, at the 34th Fini Cup, a sleepless Sophocles insists that he has prepared for every scenario. Reigning champion De Rosa draws the crowd’s attention, Horacio arrives with his newly evolved Vikavolt, and Team Rocket enter with Meowth hidden inside a mechanical Vikavolt suit.
Hapu opens the race, and the announcer Anna explains that the Vikavolt must pass checkpoints over land and sea. De Rosa takes the early lead over the water, but a sudden gust whips up the waves and knocks many racers into the ocean, while Sophocles uses String Shot to cling to a checkpoint and moves into first place. Horacio’s Vikavolt draws level, and the two rivals weave through a dense forest together. In the cave section, Jessie and Wobbuffet switch off the lights, and Sophocles freezes in fear until Vikavolt lights the way with its electricity. Ahead, Team Rocket have netted Horacio’s Vikavolt and several others with a mechanical claw. Sophocles’ Vikavolt wrestles the claw, Horacio’s Vikavolt knocks out Meowth’s suit with Charge Beam, and Sophocles’ Vikavolt slashes the net open before Bewear bursts through the ceiling and carries Team Rocket away.
The freed Vikavolt emerge to cheers from spectators watching on a giant screen. Sophocles counts down, everyone sets off together, and Horacio and Sophocles race neck and neck around the final corner. Horacio leads into the home stretch, but Sophocles’ Vikavolt edges ahead by a nose to win the 34th Fini Cup, then fondly clamps its jaws around its Trainer’s head. Horacio walks over, offers his hand and admits defeat, and the rivalry ends in a handshake. Later, walking along the beach with his classmates, Sophocles admires his Buginium Z and admits that he has no idea when he will get a Z-Ring. Hapu then appears and explains that the other racers told her how he saved them in the cave. She presents him with a Z-Ring of his own, and Sophocles fastens it on his wrist as it sparkles in the sunset.
