Synopsis

The Pokémon School’s celebrated graduate Ilima returns from Kalos with an Eevium Z, and before Ash can battle him, Ilima and his Eevee single-handedly rout a gang of grudge-holding Team Skull grunts. In a parking lot, Ilima’s Eevee dodges Take Down and wins with Swift, and its opponent, Kagetora, rewards him with an Eevium Z. At school, Ash’s Torracat spars with Kiawe’s Turtonator, and when Sophocles asks why Pikachu has not evolved, Ash explains that he and Pikachu decided long ago that it is happy as it is. A crowd of screaming girls announces Ilima’s arrival, and Mallow tells Ash and Lillie that he is a former student who skipped grades and went to study in Kalos; his fan club credits him with half of Samson Oak’s trophies and with once making Komala open its eyes. Over Lumiose Galettes, Kukui reveals his plan for an Alola Pokémon League, and Ilima agrees to take part.

Komala rolls towards Ilima’s voice but goes straight back to sleep, and Ilima laughs off most of the rumours—except the one about jumping from the big tree. The class tries PokéDive, a sport in which Trainer and Pokémon leap into the lake together: Lana and Popplio dive gracefully, Ash and Pikachu collide in midair, and Kiawe dives alone because Marowak is afraid of water. Ilima finishes with a handstand on the highest board and a synchronised somersault with Eevee. When Sophocles suggests a Vaporeon would dive even better, Ilima explains that evolution is only one route to strength and that Eevee has strengths of its own, which his new Eevium Z will bring out. Ash sees the same bond in his own team and challenges Ilima to a battle. Meanwhile, Team Skull’s Zipp has been spying on Ilima for Tupp.

Before the match can start, Team Skull roar into the school on motorcycles. Tupp mocks Ilima’s unevolved Eevee, and when Ilima does not remember him, Tupp recalls how Ilima stole the attention of the girls who once admired his Alolan Grimer; the grunts all resent handsome rivals. Ilima asks the others to stay back. Eevee’s Quick Attack, Baby-Doll Eyes and Swift defeat nine Team Skull Pokémon, leaving only Tupp’s Salandit, Zubat and Garbodor; Eevee dodges Venoshock and Wing Attack, takes a Flame Burst and gets back up, and Ilima notes that a Normal type has few weaknesses. He then uses Extreme Evoboost: all of Eevee’s evolutions gather—a Vaporeon even rising from the school pool—to boost Eevee, and Last Resort blasts the grunts away. Ilima promises Ash their battle another time, and Sophocles finally understands his view of strength.
