Synopsis
In a barren wasteland, the group meets a boy named Henny and the robot Robon, built by his late grandfather to replant a lost forest, and Clemont refuses to let them give up as they search for the water the land needs. Crossing the dry plain towards Snowbelle City, Clemont collapses in the heat, and Ash spots an old robot planting seeds. A Chesnaught guarding it attacks with Seed Bomb, and the group takes shelter in a decaying lab. There they meet Henny, who explains that his grandfather Chapman recorded how the land was once a forest full of Pokémon until it dried up, and how he fell ill before finding the cause. Chapman built Robon to regrow the forest, and his Chesnaught still protects it. Robon now takes ages to recharge and is close to breaking down, and Henny wants both to stop, but Clemont fixes the fault and argues that giving up halts progress, and Henny agrees to keep trying.
Henny calms Chesnaught, and Clemont’s soil-analysing machine reports that nothing can grow, so Clemont reasons that a former forest must have water underground. Luxray’s X-ray vision, Noibat’s Supersonic and the vines of Chespin and Chesnaught search together and find it, and Bunnelby digs down to a ten-metre rock that has slid over the spring like a lid. Pin Missile fails to break it, and even Braixen’s Flamethrower followed by Greninja’s cooling Water Shuriken cannot crack it, so Clemont decides to haul the rock out with ropes. As everyone pulls, Team Rocket trap them all in restraining rings. When Robon asks them to step off the planted seeds, Gourgeist’s Shadow Ball sends it flying, and the tightening rings make Chesnaught cry out in pain.
Remembering Chapman’s teaching that the two must help each other, Robon throws itself in front of an attack meant for Chesnaught and is destroyed. Enraged, Chesnaught breaks free and stamps on Meowth’s controller, freeing everyone, and a combined attack of Water Shuriken, Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, Pin Missile and Swift forms a “Magna Pulse” that blasts Team Rocket off. Henny mourns Robon, but Clemont reminds him that science stops only when people give up, and he rebuilds the robot, which reboots successfully. Robon’s built-in drill breaks the rock and water gushes out, and Clemont’s analyser now shows that plants can grow. Henny resolves to become a scientist who can maintain Robon, Clemont praises Chapman’s precision, and the two inventors shake hands, as do Chespin and Chesnaught. In a final scene, Robon waters a budding plant beneath a rainbow.
