Synopsis
Crossing the Lumiose Badlands, the group helps a colony of Spoink oppressed by a greedy Grumpig and its Team Rocket partners, and Ash’s Goomy evolves into Sliggoo to win the fight. Bonnie worries that Goomy seems to be coughing, but Clemont thinks it is trying to learn a new move, and Ash’s practice session with Pikachu is interrupted by an injured Spoink begging for help. After Clemont treats it, the Spoink leads them to its oasis, where a Grumpig lounges by the water while the other Spoink are forced to carry food to it. When one trips and spills its load, Grumpig fires a Shadow Ball, and the travelling Spoink reveals that Grumpig caused its injuries too. Goomy, remembering its own mistreatment by Bug types, is as angry as Ash.
Grumpig hypnotises the Spoink into attacking, but Ash tells Pikachu not to fight back because the Spoink are not to blame; the group flees into a cave, where iron bars slam down and trap them. Team Rocket appear beside Grumpig and explain that they found the hungry Pokémon and persuaded it to dominate the Spoink so that it could have all the food it wanted, with a share for them. They demand Pikachu, and when Ash refuses, Grumpig attacks the hypnotised Spoink and the trio threaten more of the same. Ash has no choice but to hand Pikachu over. To everyone’s surprise, Chespin leaves its Poké Ball and climbs into the cage beside Pikachu. Team Rocket leave Grumpig on guard and load the food onto their balloon, never intending to share it.
While Grumpig sleeps, Goomy and Dedenne slip between the bars to steal the key, but Grumpig catches Dedenne and knocks it out. Chespin tries to pick its lock with Vine Whip, and Frogadier batters the brittle rock around the cell door. Seeing Dedenne fall, Goomy remembers its painful past and stands up to Grumpig alone, taking heavy damage. As Grumpig moves to finish it with Iron Tail, Ash breaks free and takes the blow himself. Moved, Goomy evolves into Sliggoo, learns Dragon Breath and defeats Grumpig, breaking its hold over the Spoink. Chespin frees itself and Pikachu, Grumpig realises Team Rocket were only using it, and the trio are blasted off. The Spoink take back their food, and when the travelling Spoink offers the remorseful Grumpig a piece of fruit, it is welcomed back as a friend rather than a tyrant.
