An Undersea Place to Call Home! is the 3rd episode of Pokémon the Series: XY Kalos Quest, the eighteenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 846th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 824, Bulbapedia code XY024). It first aired in Japan on 20 November 2014 and in the United States on 7 February 2015.
Due on TV Tokyo on 24 April 2014 but postponed after the Sewol ferry disaster, it aired in Japan on 20 November 2014 and premiered on Cartoon Network at 3:30 p.m. on 7 February 2015, the last premiere of the four-hour marathon — which makes it the season’s third episode on TV, on DVD and in TPCi’s production codes (1803). It is set before Ash’s Cyllage Gym battle, and its dub narrator speaks in the past tense.
Synopsis
Before Ash’s Cyllage Gym battle, the group joins two underwater archaeologists in a submarine search for a sunken liner and helps the Skrelp and Dragalge that live in the wreck save their home from Team Rocket. Lunching on the Muraille Coast, Ash wants to train for his match with Grant, but Serena persuades him that fishing will ease his stress and Clemont suggests he catch a Water type. Ash hooks a furious Skrelp that lunges at his face; Bonnie bandages its injured head, but it thrashes free, fires Sludge Bomb and badly poisons Pikachu with Toxic. As the group hurries towards a Pokémon Center, a couple in a van stops and cures Pikachu with an Antidote. They are Eddy and Lindsey, underwater archaeologists looking for the S.S. Cussler, a luxury liner that sank after hitting an iceberg years ago and that they believe the currents carried near the coast. Short of hands, they accept the group’s help, though Lindsey warns that the dive is dangerous. Team Rocket overhear and set out to claim the ship’s treasure.
Lindsey’s submarine can take only two passengers, and Clemont’s random-selection machine picks Ash and Serena, to Bonnie’s annoyance. Beneath the waves they pass Qwilfish, Octillery and many other Water types, spot the bandaged Skrelp with two others, and ride out a powerful current that cuts their communications. They find the Cussler, marked with a Milotic emblem, and see two Dragalge using Acid to weld it to another wreck, building a bigger home where Luvdisc, Chinchou and Remoraid play with the Skrelp. A light in the hull turns out to be Team Rocket’s Magikarp submarine cutting into the ship. When the Skrelp and Dragalge attack the submarine, Pikachu intervenes and the bandaged Skrelp calls off its friends, then turns on Team Rocket, who blast their target safe loose with a charge.
The flooded wreck begins to collapse; Ash rallies the Water types to hold it up and suggests sealing the gap with a metal plate, which the Dragalge fix in place with Acid. On the surface, returning whirlpools wreck Team Rocket’s submarine, fling them clear and separate them from the safe. Froakie, who has been clinging to Team Rocket’s sub with Skrelp, is caught in a whirlpool too, until Ash urges it to jump: carrying Skrelp on its back, Froakie leaps from one piece of floating debris to the next and lands safely in Ash’s arms. At sunset the group waves goodbye to the Skrelp and Dragalge, and Ash realises that a jump like Froakie’s could be the key to beating Grant’s Onix at the Cyllage Gym.
