Synopsis
Ash stands ready in the Hearthome Gym for his fifth Sinnoh Gym battle, and Fantina makes a dramatic entrance, vowing to keep the Relic Badge, while Barry watches from the stands with Dawn and Brock. Meanwhile, in Majolica Town, James announces a Pokémon Contest, and Jessie, as “Jessilina”, leaves to enter it. The Gym battle is three-on-three, and Fantina opens with Gengar, against which Ash chooses Buizel, ready for Hypnosis. Gengar’s Levitate lets it dodge Aqua Jet easily, SonicBoom misses, and Gengar’s never-missing Shadow Punch lands before it tries Hypnosis. Then Buizel spins on its back while firing Water Gun, creating whips of water that block the Hypnosis and trap Gengar, a technique that Fantina dubs the “Counter Shield”. Gengar’s Night Shade and Buizel’s Water Pulse both hit home, but only Buizel is left standing.
Fantina’s second choice is Mismagius, which cannot learn Hypnosis, and Ash sends out Chimchar. It charges with Flame Wheel and then spins out a fiery Counter Shield with Flamethrower, deflecting Psywave, Dark Pulse and Magical Leaf, and it finishes Mismagius with Flame Wheel. Then comes Drifblim, the Pokémon that ended Ash’s unofficial challenge. Pikachu’s Thunderbolt Counter Shield is blown away by Psychic, and Drifblim surrounds itself with a whirl of Will-O-Wisp that Fantina calls a “Counter Counter Shield”. It seizes Pikachu, puts it to sleep with Hypnosis and knocks it out with Ominous Wind. Buizel returns, and a spinning Aqua Jet breaks through the shield and lands, but Ominous Wind destroys its next attack, Will-O-Wisp cancels Water Pulse, and Hypnosis and Psychic knock Buizel out. Ash is down to his last Pokémon, Chimchar.
Drifblim’s Will-O-Wisp stops Chimchar’s Flame Wheel, but Chimchar’s Flamethrower absorbs the fiery shield and hits Drifblim hard. Chimchar burrows behind its opponent with Dig and slams it into the ground, and when Drifblim tries Hypnosis, a point-blank Flamethrower knocks it out. Ash has won, and Fantina praises Drifblim and presents him with the Relic Badge, his fifth. That night Barry announces that he is going to train on Iron Island, and when Ash decides to challenge the Canalave Gym next and suggests they travel together, Barry says that if Ash wins there he will consider him a real rival. Meanwhile, at the Majolica Contest, Jessilina’s Yanmega sends hearts and ribbons swirling through the air with Silver Wind, and Mr. Contesta awards her the Majolica Ribbon, her second Ribbon. It is the first episode to show a Gym battle and a Contest together, and the first Diamond and Pearl Contest that Dawn does not enter.
