Synopsis

At a Pokémon Center, Trainers including Paul watch a televised League battle between Champion Cynthia and Elite Four member Aaron, and Ash and his friends arrive in time to see the finish. After Drapion’s early Pin Missiles, the match comes down to Cynthia’s Gastrodon against Aaron’s exhausted Beautifly, whose last Solar Beam is blocked by Stone Edge, which knocks Beautifly out and keeps Cynthia’s title. Team Rocket mock Aaron’s loss, and Paul asks Ash whether he will use Chimchar’s Blaze; Ash refuses to rely on it, and Paul walks out. While Ash trains for the Hearthome Gym, with Dawn’s Pokémon joining Turtwig, Staravia and Gliscor in attacking Pikachu, Buizel and Chimchar, Brock finds Paul nearby, where disguised Team Rocket members are grooming Paul’s Torterra. Paul explains that Reggie gave up battling after a single loss at the Battle Pyramid, which is why he lacks the Brave Symbol, and says he wants to surpass his brother.

Paul and Brock join Ash’s group, where Chimchar is frightened of its former Trainer until Piplup and Turtwig step up to protect it. Paul criticises Ash’s training, shows off his Relic Badge and mocks Ash’s reliance on Blaze, so Ash challenges him to a one-on-one battle, and Turtwig volunteers. Against Paul’s Honchkrow, Turtwig strikes first with a weak Energy Ball and dodges a charge, but Night Slash and repeated Aerial Aces knock it down, and Brock urges Ash to attack instead of relying on dodging. Turtwig gets up and evolves into Grotle in mid-battle, but its new weight makes it too slow to avoid the next Aerial Ace, its Bite fails, and Sky Attack and Dark Pulse knock it out. Ash loses. Nurse Joy treats Grotle, and Brock explains that Grotle weighs roughly ten times as much as Turtwig. Outside, Paul’s Torterra keeps glancing towards the Pokémon Center, and Paul tells it to leave Grotle alone.

Ash tries to cheer Grotle up by pointing out its stronger Defence, but it remains depressed, and that night it sneaks out to train, tripping again and again and crashing into a rock as it tries to build up speed. Most of Ash’s Pokémon follow it, and when Paul’s Torterra appears, Pikachu prepares for a fight, but Chimchar stops the others: Torterra means no harm. It has Gliscor demonstrate Steel Wing and X-Scissor and takes both hits without trying to dodge, then rears up, pins Gliscor and unleashes Frenzy Plant, stopping just short of hitting it. Grotle understands the lesson: defence can make up for lost speed. Ash, Dawn and Brock arrive after Staravia and Piplup wake them, and Ash thanks Torterra and vows to help Grotle develop a style of its own; even Team Rocket take the lesson to heart. The next day Paul denies having anything to do with it, and Ash promises his team that he will win their next battle and the Hearthome Gym.
