Synopsis
Back in Solaceon Town, Ash and his friends read a Sinnoh Star article about a “Scarf Monster” said to roam the area, which Brock dismisses because the paper is not the most reliable. On their way to visit Angie, though, they glimpse a shadowy creature resembling the monster before it vanishes. At Angie’s house they share dinner, but when Ash mentions the creature, Angie grows anxious and runs out. The friends follow her to a cave, where she begs them to keep the creature a secret, though it has already disappeared. Meanwhile Team Rocket, posing as news reporters, are hunting for the monster, and Officer Jenny tells them that the only clue so far is a pool of saliva. Back at the park, the group set a trap, and the creature walks right into it, revealing itself as a Lickilicky wearing an inflatable ring around its neck.
Angie confesses that she was caring for a Lickitung at her family’s Day Care and trained it too hard: it learned Rollout and evolved, which breaks the Day Care’s rule against evolving the Pokémon in its care. When Team Rocket ask where the creature went, Ash lies to them, and after they leave Angie fills Lickilicky’s ring with helium so that it floats and guides it back to the cave through the air, frightening an old fisherman who sees something flying overhead. The next day Team Rocket unveil a mecha that dangles a huge ball of Pokémon food to lure the creature, and Lickilicky follows the smell. Ash and Angie reach the cave to find only a broken rope, and as Lickilicky approaches the food, Ash and his friends confront the trio, who insist that the creature cannot be a Lickilicky because Lickilicky do not wear tubes.
Angie orders Shinx to pop the ring with Crunch, and Team Rocket admit that it is a Lickilicky, though Jessie argues that the tube is what made it the monster; when they try to capture it anyway, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blasts them off. Just then Angie’s parents arrive. Her father is angry when he hears the story, but the Lickitung’s Trainer, an excitable man fond of foreign phrases, is delighted by the evolution, so Angie escapes serious trouble. As the group leave Solaceon, Angie’s parents tease her that she and Ash could run the Day Care together one day; Angie tells them to stop, and far down the road Ash sneezes. It is Angie’s last appearance and her only one outside the Summer Academy arc. The episode was the last to air in the United States before Pokémon Platinum’s North American release, and in the dub the narrator reads out the “To Be Continued” card for the first time.
