Synopsis
Walking through a forest, the group spot a Cleffa hiding in the bushes, and a housekeeper named Monica emerges, relieved to have found it; it belongs to her employer, Mr. Backlot, whose nearby mansion is their destination. Brock falls for Monica on the spot and Croagunk swiftly intervenes. When a storm breaks, Monica leads everyone to the estate, where Mr. Backlot welcomes them and she wheels out a cart of Poffins for his Pokémon and the visitors’ as well. A wild Swinub charges in and devours the entire supply, then polishes off a huge bowl of food from the kitchen and lies down contentedly, and Dawn thinks it is adorable. Mr. Backlot explains that it often wanders in from the forest. Meanwhile Team Rocket watch the mansion and plot a new scheme to steal Pokémon, Jessie ruling out the Swinub because it would only eat all their food.
Dawn asks to bake Poffins of her own, and Monica shows her how using fresh berries from the garden, but as soon as they are set out, Swinub follows the scent and eats the lot, leaving Piplup upset. The next morning, as the Pokémon play in the Trophy Garden, Dawn sets aside a bowl just for Swinub, but the ground collapses and all the Pokémon fall into a hole; Team Rocket emerge in a giant digging machine with their motto, the food and the Pokémon. Ash and Dawn leap aboard as it lifts off, and although turbulence throws Ash clear, Dawn climbs to the dome holding the captives and pulls a lever that drops it inside the machine. Swinub smells the food and smashes through a wall with Take Down, but the trio eject both Dawn and Swinub in mid-air, and they land safely in a bush.
Dawn asks Swinub to follow Team Rocket’s scent, but it keeps getting distracted by food, and when it brings her an apple, Dawn breaks down in tears, afraid she will never see her Pokémon again. Seeing her distress, Swinub picks up the trail and leads her to the trio, knocking them off their machine with Take Down before heading for the stolen food. It bites Carnivine on the head, and when Yanmega’s Steel Wing and Carnivine’s Bite come at it, Swinub freezes both with Ice Shard, then breaks into the machine with Take Down to free the captives. As Monica and the others arrive in Mr. Backlot’s car, Swinub blocks Bullet Seed and SonicBoom with Ice Shard, and Piplup’s Bubble Beam and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blast Team Rocket off. Dawn thanks Swinub and invites it onto her team, and it blushes and agrees to be caught, her first capture since Buizel. Monica mentions an upcoming Contest in Celestic Town, and the group set off towards Hearthome City.
