Synopsis

The day before the Solaceon Town Contest, Ash tries to teach Turtwig Energy Ball under Kenny’s eye, but the attempt backfires and sends Turtwig flying; Kenny notices how hard it is concentrating, and Ash accepts that the move will take time. Dawn practises with her newly evolved Ambipom, whose Swift fills the sky with a rainbow of stars, and rewards her team with Poffins. After losing at Hearthome, she explains, she wants to build her routine around a single move. Elsewhere, Jessie, in her Coordinator disguise as “Jessilina”, trains late into the night with Dustox, while James and Meowth hold a strategy meeting without any actual strategy. On Contest day Ash, Pikachu and Dawn’s Pokémon cheer from the stands, Johanna watches at home with her Glameow, and Marian introduces the Solaceon Ribbon and the judges: Mr. Contesta, Mr. Sukizo and Nurse Joy.

Kenny’s Breloom scatters Stun Spore, then flicks an Energy Ball to the ceiling with its tail and punches it with Mach Punch, lighting up the hall to the judges’ delight. Jessilina’s Dustox lifts its Trainer into the air with Whirlwind and finishes with a Psybeam in a cloud of green smoke, earning praise for their synchronisation. Ambipom enters with Double Hit and repeats its rainbow Swift even faster, smothering the stage in stars, and Brock and Zoey, watching from a Pokémon Center, worry that it is overdone. They are right: Dawn fails to pass the Performance Stage for the second Contest in a row. She congratulates Kenny and stays to watch with a smile, though Ash can see how hurt she is. Kenny and Jessilina reach the final, where Dustox dodges Prinplup’s Drill Peck and lands Psybeam, and when time runs out Jessie is ahead on points, winning the Solaceon Ribbon, her first official Ribbon, as James and Meowth celebrate.

Kenny moves on, telling Dawn he will see her at the next Contest and urging Ash to keep working with Turtwig. Dawn shuts herself in her room, clutching the ribbon her mother gave her, and cries herself to sleep. The next morning she is still in bed when Zoey arrives and demands a battle, insisting that Dawn use Ambipom. Dawn performs the rainbow Swift again, and Zoey’s Glameow simply breaks through the stars with Iron Tail and hits Ambipom with Shock Wave. The move is beautiful, Zoey explains, but Ambipom vanishes behind it, and an appeal is supposed to show off the Pokémon rather than hide it. She also admits that she skipped the Solaceon Contest to recover from her own loss at Hearthome. Taking the advice to heart, Dawn decides to learn from her defeat instead of wallowing in it, and the group set out for Veilstone City, where Ash hopes to win his next Badge. For once Team Rocket neither recite their motto nor blast off.
