Synopsis

Refusing to dwell on his loss, Ash trains Pikachu, Aipom and Turtwig hard enough to smash through pillars of coal. Dawn points out that only Turtwig has a type advantage over Roark, but Ash will not call for his other Pokémon from Professor Oak or borrow Piplup, reasoning that if Paul can win at a disadvantage, so can he. He accepts Brock’s offer to spar against Sudowoodo, a Rock type with the same Rock Head Ability as Roark’s Onix, while Dawn practises new combinations at the Pokémon Center, where Marian announces on television that the next Contest will be held in Floaroma Town. At the museum, Dr. Kenzo discovers that one of his three fossil revival machines has been stolen with a fossil still inside, and Officer Jenny is called in. Team Rocket are celebrating the theft when they realise nobody grabbed a fossil.

Then the stolen machine powers up on its own and releases a revived Aerodactyl. Jessie’s Poké Ball is swatted aside, the trio are flattened by Giga Impact, and the prehistoric Pokémon flies off toward Oreburgh City. Roark, digging nearby, compliments Ash’s training and explains that his Cranidos was the first Pokémon ever revived by the machine. Meanwhile Aerodactyl rampages across town firing Hyper Beam, nearly hits Dawn’s Pokémon and breaks into the museum, freeing a revived Armaldo and Kabutops, which drive back the scientists with Hyper Beam and Mud Shot. Ian alerts Roark, Officer Jenny orders an evacuation, and the two Fossil Pokémon are cornered at the mine, where Cranidos’s Flamethrower and Zen Headbutt stop them, just as Team Rocket’s mecha scoops them up.

Aerodactyl returns and blasts the captives free with Hyper Beam, knocking the mecha over. Kenzo’s assistant recalls Armaldo and Kabutops, and Cranidos braces against Aerodactyl’s Giga Impact before being driven back. When Aerodactyl aims a Hyper Beam at Ash and Pikachu, Dawn’s Buneary and Piplup block it with Ice Beam and Bubble Beam, then wait until its next Giga Impact is almost upon them and spin past to knock it down, allowing Dr. Kenzo to catch it. Team Rocket try to flee in their righted mecha and trap Cranidos in a net, but it glows and evolves into Rampardos, tears free, pulls the restorer unit out of the machine and wrecks the mecha with Zen Headbutt, blasting the trio away. With the machine recovered, Ash asks Roark for a rematch the next day, and Roark agrees. Ash then asks Dawn to help him train, and she accepts, seeing it as practice for Floaroma too.
