Synopsis

The day before the Kanto Grand Festival, the group reach Indigo Plateau and May races ahead to the stadiums. Outside the Pokémon Center, Jessie, disguised as a reporter called “Jessadia”, is broadcasting a short show with James, Meowth and Wobbuffet as her crew, and Lilian is full of praise for it. May shows her five Ribbons to confirm her entry, and her mother Caroline calls to wish her luck, explaining that she and Norman cannot attend. Aipom, still following Ash, steals his hat and runs off with Pikachu in pursuit, until Drew’s Roselia traps it in a shower of red petals and a Slowbro’s Psychic floats it back into Ash’s arms. Slowbro’s Trainer introduces herself as Solidad, an old acquaintance of Drew, Harley and Brock, who is promptly turned down when he tries to charm her. That night Solidad tells May that she beat Drew in his very first Contest, and a mysterious man hands Max a black rose for May, which explodes when she takes it.

Lilian opens the Grand Festival the next morning under a sky full of fireworks, with some 270 Coordinators taking part. The Appeals preliminaries run in two stadiums, one judged by the usual panel joined by Lilian’s older sister Vivian from Hoenn, and the other judged by three Nurse Joys, with “Jessadia” announcing. Among the early entries, which include a Rapidash and a Goldeen, a Venusaur scores 77, a Tropius 86, a Jigglypuff 83, a Pichu 88, a Tyrogue 91 and a Salamence 93. May’s Combusken slices a frisbee with Sky Uppercut, Solidad’s Lapras forms a pillar of ice with Sheer Cold and Drew’s Masquerain dazzles with Silver Wind. Then Harley takes the stage dressed as May, calling himself a naughty Coordinator, and dances while his Banette performs Will-O-Wisp, to May’s utter disgust.

When the results are announced, Solidad, May, Drew and Harley are all among the 64 Coordinators who make it through to the Performance Stage, while Team Rocket, for once, keep to their broadcasting and never even attempt their motto. At dusk Harley runs up to May still in his May outfit, giving her a “Harley headache”, and tells her she will be even more frightened once he wins; then he drops the act and vows to beat Drew as well. Aipom snatches Ash’s hat yet again and leads him and Pikachu on another chase around the Plateau. The following day, the second round of appeals begins to narrow the field of 64 to the Coordinators who will battle, and Drew opens with a Pokémon nobody has seen before: his new Absol.
