Synopsis
While Ash prepares himself mentally for the Ever Grande Conference, the group find Drew training his Masquerain on a cliff, its Silver Wind shattering an incoming wave. May proudly shows off her four Ribbons, and Drew calmly reveals that he already has five, telling her that the Grand Festival is six weeks away and the Pacifidlog Contest is her last chance. May challenges him to a battle, and Drew agrees once he has warmed up. Team Rocket interrupt with a vacuum mecha aimed at Pikachu that sucks everyone into their Magikarp submarine. When Wobbuffet pops out unannounced, Max hits a switch by accident, the submarine races into an undersea current and everyone is shot into the air, landing scattered across a misty island. Jessie, James and Meowth have lost Wobbuffet, and May and Drew are separated from the others.
An old man named Roderick steers a motorboat through the whirlpools surrounding the island and explains that they are on Mirage Island, which he discovered forty years ago and where rare Liechi Berries grow. Drew knows of the berries, which are prized by Coordinators, while May has never heard of them. When Drew spots some Liechi Berries hanging over a river he rushes to the edge; May follows, the unstable ledge gives way and both are swept over a waterfall. Roderick’s Bellsprout cannot reach them with Vine Whip, Drew is knocked unconscious by the fall, and May keeps his head above water until a group of Wynaut rescue them and carry them to a cave full of Liechi Berries, where May looks after her unconscious rival until he wakes.
Ash, Max and Brock reach the waterfall, hear what happened from Roderick and follow the river, while Team Rocket chase cries they mistake for Wobbuffet’s. Seeing a Wynaut eating Liechi Berries, the trio try to vacuum up the berries and May with them, but Drew’s Roselia frees her with Petal Dance and the Wynaut fight Seviper. Ash’s group arrive, Pikachu’s Thunderbolt beats Seviper, and the Wynaut’s combined Safeguard blocks Cacnea’s cannon-boosted Pin Missile. Another Thunderbolt makes the trio drop their stolen berries, and a combined Silver Wind from Drew’s Masquerain and May’s Beautifly blasts them away. Roderick ferries everyone off the island and gives May a bowl of Liechi Berries to make Pokéblocks for the Contest, with Ash refereeing for the first time instead of Brock.
