Synopsis
Shelly reports that Kyogre is loose, and Archie raises the Red Orb as Maxie begs him to stop. Shelly’s Walrein faces Magma’s Mightyena, and Archie escapes in a mini-helicopter, with Tabitha sending the disguised Lance after him while Brock, May and Max hide on Monsu Island. Amid a raging storm Archie summons Kyogre and announces that he will sink the island; Maxie objects, but Archie no longer listens. Lance throws off his hood and warns that the orbs’ power is too great for anyone to control, and that a clash between Kyogre and Groudon would be catastrophic. A tremor rocks the crashed Magma helicopter, and the possessed Pikachu wakes, breaks free with electricity and runs off toward Groudon. Lance reunites with Brock and the others, and his Dragonite tears open the wreckage to release Ash.
Lance rides Dragonite after Archie, dodging Kyogre’s Hydro Pump while his red Gyarados trades Hyper Beams with the giant in a stalemate, and the Red Orb fuses with Archie just as the Blue Orb has with Pikachu. Pikachu shocks Team Rocket out of the way, climbs onto Groudon’s metal container and draws the storm’s lightning into himself like a lightning rod. A colossal bolt awakens Groudon and destroys Team Aqua’s submarine in the process. Groudon’s Drought clears the storm clouds, the island’s volcano erupts, and Pikachu ends up perched on Groudon’s head as it lumbers out to face its ancient rival. Kyogre summons an immense tsunami, but Groudon’s Solar Beam evaporates it and its Fissure strikes back, and Lance realises that Groudon is trying to stop Kyogre rather than destroy the world.
Ash refuses to leave Pikachu, and his friends stay beside him. The orb-charged Pikachu deflects Kyogre’s Hydro Pump with Thunderbolt, Brock’s Mudkip and May’s Beautifly distract Archie, and Groudon’s Solar Beam punches through Kyogre’s wall of water. The blow forces both orbs out of their hosts: Archie and Pikachu faint, Dragonite catches Archie, and Ash dives into the sea after Pikachu before Gyarados scoops them up. Kyogre itself carries Ash and Pikachu to shore. The Red and Blue Orbs merge and vanish, Groudon and Kyogre return to their resting places beneath land and sea, and the schemes of Team Magma and Team Aqua are over. Lance bids the group farewell, and the travellers resume their journey to Mossdeep City. Fissure, used here by Groudon, is the last time that move appears in the anime.
