Synopsis

Dot’s Quaxly learns to weave other Pokémon’s movements into its moves and evolves into Quaxwell during her Terastal battle with Larry, and although Larry wins, Dot passes her second test. At the Medali Gym, the receptionist says that Larry is out visiting clients somewhere in town, to the annoyance of Dot, who has already planned her strategy. Quaxly runs off and is found watching a dance by an Oricorio whose Trainer, the dancer Diva, promises to reveal Larry’s whereabouts if Quaxly dances with her first. Quaxly shows off his moves, but Oricorio’s fiery Revelation Dance impresses him even more, and he starts copying its steps while using Low Kick; Diva is so moved that she forgets to give the hint until Roy reminds her. It leads them to the Treasure Eatery, where Larry, who has just finished a meal, greets them; Liko and Roy are surprised that the teacher they saw at Naranja is both a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member. The Cook presses a button that turns the dining room into a battlefield, and Larry explains that Dot must use two Pokémon and will be judged on her use of Terastallization.

Dot leads with Quaxly against Dudunsparce, using Water Gun to blind it before Liquidation, but Glare paralyses Quaxly and Boomburst hits him hard. She switches to Tinkatink, who has never battled and is intimidated until Quaxly pops out of his Poké Ball to encourage her. Tinkatink blocks Glare by covering her eyes with her hammer, dodges Hyper Drill and counters with Brutal Swing, and the two spinning Pokémon clash several times; but as she winds up again, Larry swaps in Staraptor, the attack misses, and Wing Attack knocks Tinkatink out. Back in, Quaxly’s Water Gun and Pound barely bother Staraptor, whose Hurricane blows him back; Quaxly uses the smoke from Air Slash to get behind it, but paralysis freezes him mid-Liquidation and Wing Attack overpowers him. Badly hurt, Quaxly gets up anyway. Frustrated, Dot notices him flapping his wings like Staraptor and remembers how he blended Oricorio’s dance into his moves, and she realises that Quaxly can combine his moves with whatever he has seen.

Quaxly folds Dudunsparce’s deep breath into Boomburst, Oricorio’s steps into Low Kick, Staraptor’s wingbeats into Pound and Tinkatink’s spin into Liquidation, which overpowers Wing Attack and sends Staraptor flying. He then evolves into Quaxwell, and Dot immediately Terastallizes him; a powered-up Liquidation breaks through Air Slash and sends Staraptor crashing down, but before Quaxwell can follow up, his paralysis takes hold. Larry Terastallizes Staraptor into a pure Normal type, and its boosted Facade knocks out the paralysed Quaxwell. Dot is crushed to have come so close, but Larry’s report says that she has passed, citing her use of two Pokémon, her well-timed Terastallization of a newly evolved partner and her skill at combining moves, and he sends a stamp to her Rotom Phone. Roy reads Quaxwell’s Pokédex entry, which says it weaves moves from people and Pokémon into its dances, and Dot vows to catch up with her partner. The celebration turns into a meal of grilled rice balls that the Cook keeps serving, and Larry, unable to split the bill, glumly pays for everything.
