Filler / stand-alone episodeBrock is the one being chased
The Heartbreak of Brock is the 41st episode of Pokémon: Johto League Champions, the fourth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 198th episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 200, Bulbapedia code EP198). It first aired in Japan on 17 May 2001 and in the United States on 13 April 2002. It falls within the season’s Whitestone & Bayleef stretch (EP197–EP200).
Synopsis
Brock is pursued for once by a marriage-obsessed girl named Temacu, who then falls for James and finally for her doctor. Camping in a park near Olivine, Brock catches Temacu as she trips chasing her Nidorina, and she immediately plans their wedding, dubbing him “Exeggbracloy”. Her father, a Pokémon researcher, puts the gang up for the night. Misty tells Brock bluntly that this may be his only chance at love, and Temacu even gifts him a Nidorino to pair with her Nidorina.
Team Rocket net the family’s Pokémon, but Totodile’s Water Gun sends Arbok flying and Weezing’s Smokescreen covers their escape, along with Temacu, who tripped over their rope. She promptly transfers her affections to a horrified James, nicknaming him “Madewvusu”. Discovering that she is a professor’s daughter, the trio return her in disguise as heroic rescuers, are invited to dinner and stuff a bag with Poké Balls from the laboratory shelves.
Misty unmasks Jessie at the table. Chikorita downs Arbok with a single Tackle, Poliwhirl’s Bubble and Chikorita’s Razor Leaf batter Weezing, and Temacu takes a Water Gun meant for James, after which Vine Whip, Water Gun and Thunderbolt send the thieves skyward. Just as Brock decides he loves her, Temacu wakes and falls for her doctor, who proposes on the spot. Brock leaves heartbroken but hopeful.
Major Events
- Temacu falls for Brock, then James
Trivia
- The English title plays on the film "The Heartbreak Kid".
- The screenplay is by Yukiyoshi Ōhashi.
- This is a stand-alone episode: it can be skipped without losing the thread of the Johto story.
- The Who’s That Pokémon? segment features Nidorino in Japan, where it almost always matched the episode, but Mareep in the US, where 4Kids picked the Pokémon at random.
Changes in the English Dub
- The dub adds an aside from Misty to Ash that they will “get married someday”; in Japanese she only notes that Temacu has fallen for Brock.
- Temacu’s Japanese name Himeka and the Pokémon-name nicknames that spell out “Takeshi” and “Kojirō” are lost.
