Giratina and the Sky Warrior or "Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl the Movie: Giratina and the Bouquet of the (Frozen) Sky: Shaymin" as the Japanese title directly translates is the 11th movie in the Pokemon franchise, and the second part of the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl trilogy.
The movie is directed as usual by Kunihiko Yuyama and continues many of the plot elements from Pokemon: The Rise of Darkrai before it. Unbeknown to audiences at the time the movie's plot also tied in significantly with the yet-to-be-released Pokemon Platinum for Nintendo DS.
Giratina and the Sky Warrior was originally announced at the end of it's prequel, The Rise of Darkrai in the form of a teaser trailer at the end of the film. Said trailer featured the Pokemon Regiggias rising from the earths surface.
The films initial release came on July 19th, 2008 when it arrived in theaters across Japan and the JP DVD release followed later that year on December 19th, 2008. It arrived to theaters in the U.S on February 13th, 2009. Staggered theater and DVD releases continued across the globe until the middle of 2009 when the European releases were finally complete.
This would be the first time that Universal Studio's were charged with the distribution of a Pokemon Movie, and was infact the first time Universal Studio's had distributed an anime film.
Viz Media re-released the movie on July 7th, 2015 in region 1 DVD format. The region 2 DVD was released by Universal for the UK & Europe on November 28th, 2011.
Plot/Story
Official Description
Giratina is the sole Pokémon living in the Reverse World, a little-known realm adjacent to our own. Enraged when Palkia and Dialga disrupt time and space, it drags Dialga into the Reverse World for a battle—but the conflict is broken up by a tiny Shaymin, the Gratitude Pokémon! After departing the Reverse World and meeting Ash and his friends, Shaymin—communicating telepathically—asks for help so it can be reunited with the other Shaymin in the Gracidea garden. Soon after Ash and his friends agree to assist Shaymin, they're dragged into the Reverse World and meet Newton Graceland, who's been researching the mysterious realm. Little do they know that Newtown's former assistant, Zero, seeks to harness Giratina's power to rule the Reserve World, even if that means destroying the real world! Can our heroes and their Pokémon thwart Zero's evil plans and protect both worlds? Will Giratina resolve its differences with Dialga? And what will Ash and his friends learn about that special Shaymin?
